“Learning a Bit of Everything” While Developing Websites – One of My Experiences Building the Canarias Uruguay Website

Have you ever found yourself learning about the subject of a website just by reading and organizing its content during development? In this post, I’ll share one of my experiences developing the website for Canarias Uruguay.

A few years ago, I developed the website for Canarias (a major Uruguayan company known for its yerba mate products). For this client, we had to both design the website and later build a fully custom version.

From a technical standpoint, the site is a 100% customized WordPress build, made in PHP with jQuery.

What was particularly interesting about this project—beyond the technical experience of developing the site—was that I knew absolutely nothing about yerba mate, a product widely consumed in Uruguay and Argentina. As I progressed with the development, I began learning about where the raw materials were sourced, the manufacturing processes, logistical challenges, and more.

I even remember telling my coworkers after finishing the site, “I’m an expert now—ask me anything,” 😄.

In another experience, something similar happened when a good friend and I were at Ceibal converting books manually from PDF to ePUB. I was assigned a series of technical volumes on bird species, and after three days of converting content manually from PDF to HTML, I ended up learning the scientific names of many birds. It was funny—one afternoon during lunch, a bird landed next to me and I joked to my friend, “This is the Columba livia, native to…” 😄

In conclusion, I think one of the many beautiful aspects of this profession is precisely that: “learning a bit of everything.”
